Ten practical ways to increase social media engagement, based on what the platforms say they reward, plus the shortcuts that no longer work and can harm your reach.

Engagement, the likes, comments, shares, saves and replies your posts receive, matters for two reasons. It shows that your content is connecting with people, and it is one of the signals platforms use to decide who else should see it.

Search online for engagement hacks and you will find plenty of shortcuts, from engagement groups to buying followers. Most of them no longer work, and some can actively harm your reach. The tactics below are the ones that hold up, because they are based on what the platforms themselves say they reward.

    Understand what each platform rewards

Every platform ranks content differently, but they share a common goal: keep people on the app by showing them things they find interesting.

    • Instagram has said that for Reels it looks at signals such as watch time, likes, shares and comments, and its head, Adam Mosseri, has highlighted watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach as among the most important.
    • LinkedIn focuses on relevant, professional content and meaningful conversation. In March 2026 it said it limits the reach of content linked to engagement pods and automated comments.
    • TikTok recommends videos largely based on how people interact with them, including how long they watch.
    • Facebook prioritises content people are likely to interact with and find meaningful, including posts from friends, groups and Pages they engage with.

The common thread is simple: content that people genuinely watch, share and talk about gets shown to more people.

    1. Hook people in the first few seconds

On video, the opening matters more than anything else. Instagram's advice to creators is to hook viewers in the first three seconds. Start with the most interesting moment, a bold statement, a question or the end result, rather than a slow introduction or a logo.

    2. Make content worth sharing and saving

Shares and saves tell platforms that people value your content. Posts that tend to be shared or saved include:

    • Practical tips and checklists people want to refer back to
    • Useful local information
    • Behind-the-scenes content that is genuinely interesting
    • Content that makes people laugh or that they relate to
    • Clear answers to common questions in your industry

Ask yourself before posting: would someone send this to a friend or colleague?

    3. Ask for conversation, not clicks

Questions, polls and requests for opinions encourage people to comment. Make them genuine and easy to answer: "Which of these two designs would you choose?" works better than "Thoughts?".

Avoid "engagement bait", such as "Like if you agree" or "Comment YES to see more". Facebook and other platforms have long treated it as low quality and may reduce its reach.

    4. Reply to every comment

Replying to comments shows people you are listening, encourages more conversation and makes your posts more active. Reply thoughtfully rather than with a single emoji, and answer questions fully.

On TikTok and Instagram, you can reply to comments with a video, which can also become new content.

    5. Engage with others, genuinely

Spend time each week commenting on posts from customers, partners, local businesses and people in your industry. Thoughtful comments raise your profile and build relationships, and people often return the interest.

What does not work is automated commenting, mass liking or joining groups that agree to engage with each other's posts. LinkedIn has said it limits reach for this kind of activity, and other platforms take similar steps against inauthentic behaviour.

    6. Use the formats platforms are prioritising

    • Short vertical video: Instagram Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts
    • Carousels: popular on Instagram and LinkedIn for step-by-step tips and stories
    • Stories: polls, questions and quizzes on Instagram and Facebook encourage quick interaction with your existing followers
    • Live video: good for Q&As, launches and events

Instagram also offers trial reels, which are shown first to people who do not follow you. They let you test new ideas without them appearing to your followers unless they perform well.

    7. Post when your audience is active

Your platform insights show when your followers are online. Use them as a starting point, test different times and see what works for you. There is no universal best time to post.

    8. Show real people

Faces, voices and personalities build connection. Introduce your team, show the work in progress and share customer stories, with permission. People engage with people far more readily than with logos and stock images.

    9. Add captions and alt text

Many people watch video without sound, so captions help keep them watching. Alt text on images makes your content accessible to people using screen readers. Both help more people engage with what you post.

    10. Review and repeat what works

Check your insights monthly. Look at which posts got the most shares, saves, comments and watch time, not just likes. Make more of what works, and try new ideas alongside it.

    What to avoid

    • Buying followers or engagement. It inflates your numbers with accounts that never become customers and can harm your reach.
    • Engagement pods and automation. Platforms increasingly detect and limit them.
    • Engagement bait. Asking people to like or comment for the sake of it is often penalised.
    • Posting for the sake of it. Fewer, better posts usually outperform daily filler.
