Changing agency, selling a business or handing over to a new manager? Here is how to transfer a Facebook Page safely, whether it is managed personally or through a business portfolio.

There are plenty of good reasons to hand a Facebook Page over to someone else. You might be selling your business, passing day-to-day marketing to a colleague, moving a Page from a former employee's control back to the company, or taking back a Page an agency set up for you.

Facebook does not have a single "transfer ownership" button. Instead, you give the new owner the highest level of access, check it works, and then remove yourself. This guide explains how to do that safely.

    Before you start

    • You need full control yourself. Only someone with Facebook access with full control of a Page can add or remove other people.
    • Agree what is being handed over. A Page transfer moves the Page, its posts, followers and reviews. It does not move your personal profile, and it does not automatically move ad accounts, Instagram accounts or payment methods.
    • Check the new owner's account is secure. They should have two-factor authentication turned on before you give them control.

    Types of Page access

Facebook Pages use different levels of access. According to Facebook's help centre on giving, editing or removing Page access, the main types are:

    • Facebook access, which can include full control. People with full control can manage everything, including who else has access, and can remove other people, including you.
    • Task access, which lets people manage specific tasks such as content, messages, ads or insights, without control over who has access.
    • Community Manager access, for moderating comments and chats.

To transfer a Page, the new owner needs Facebook access with full control.

How to transfer a Page you manage directly

You need to switch into your Page to manage access. The steps are broadly:

    1. Switch into the Page from your profile menu.
    2. Go to the Page's Settings, then Page setup and Page access.
    3. Choose to add a new person with Facebook access, search for their name or email, and turn on full control.
    4. Confirm with your password. The new owner will receive an invitation and must accept it.
    5. Check the new owner has accepted and can see the Page access settings.
    6. Once you are sure, remove yourself from the Page access list.

Do not remove yourself until the new owner has accepted and confirmed they have full control. If you remove yourself first, you risk leaving the Page with nobody able to manage it.

Menu names occasionally change as Meta updates its apps, so if anything looks different, Facebook's help centre has the current steps for computer, iPhone and Android.

If the Page is in a business portfolio

Many business Pages are owned by a business portfolio (previously called Business Manager) rather than by individual profiles. Meta's guide to Page access for business portfolios explains how access works in that case.

    • Handing control to a colleague: add them as a person in your business portfolio and give them full control of the Page.
    • Letting an agency manage the Page: add the agency as a partner using their business portfolio ID. You keep ownership, and you can remove their access at any time.
    • Moving the Page to a different business, for example after a sale: the Page needs to leave your business portfolio so the new owner can add it to theirs. Before removing it, make sure the new owner already has full control of the Page, so it is never left without someone who can manage it.

    After the transfer

    The new owner should:

    • Review everyone who has access and remove anyone who no longer needs it
    • Update the Page's contact details, website and about information
    • Reconnect or replace any linked Instagram account, ad account or tools
    • Check that two-factor authentication is on for everyone with full control

The previous owner should also update any websites, email signatures or printed materials that point people to the Page, if it no longer represents their business.

    Keeping your Page safe

Pages are a common target for scams. Watch out for messages claiming your Page will be deleted unless you click a link or log in. Meta will not ask for your password in a message. Keep at least two trusted people with full control, and review access every few months.
