Organic social builds trust and relationships, while paid social reaches new audiences quickly. Here is how each works, where each falls short and how to use them together.

Should you be posting regularly to build a following, or paying to put your content in front of new people? It is one of the most common questions we hear from business owners, and the honest answer is that most businesses get the best results from using both, each for what it does best.

This guide explains the difference between organic and paid social media, the strengths and limits of each, and how to make them work together.

    What is organic social media?

Organic social media is any content you publish without paying to promote it: posts, photos, videos, Reels, Stories and replies to comments. It is seen by some of your followers, people who follow them, and anyone who finds it through hashtags, search or recommendation feeds.

On most platforms, organic reach depends on how people respond to your content. Instagram, for example, says it looks at signals such as watch time, likes and shares when deciding what to recommend. That means the quality of the content matters more than how often you post.

    What organic social does well

    • Builds relationships. Replying to comments and messages shows there are real people behind the business.
    • Shows your personality. Behind-the-scenes content, team posts and customer stories help people get to know you.
    • Supports trust. Many people check a business's social profiles before getting in touch. An active, helpful profile reassures them.
    • Provides customer service. Social channels are often where customers ask questions or raise problems.
    • Costs nothing to publish, although it does take time and skill to do well.

    Where organic falls short

    • Reach to people who do not already follow you can be unpredictable.
    • Results build slowly. It can take months of consistent posting to see momentum.
    • You cannot choose precisely who sees your content.

    What is paid social media?

Paid social means paying a platform to show your content to a chosen audience. That ranges from boosting an existing post with a small budget to running full campaigns through tools such as Meta Ads Manager, LinkedIn Campaign Manager or TikTok Ads Manager.

    What paid social does well

    • Reaches new people. You can target by location, age, interests, job title (on LinkedIn) and more.
    • Delivers quickly. A campaign can start generating traffic or enquiries within days.
    • Retargets warm audiences, such as people who visited your website or engaged with your page, if you have set up tracking correctly.
    • Is measurable. You can see what each campaign costs and, with tracking in place, what it delivers.
    • Is scalable. If a campaign works, you can increase the budget.

    Where paid falls short

    • Results stop when the budget stops.
    • Poorly targeted or weak creative wastes money quickly.
    • Ads have to follow each platform's advertising policies, and some sectors face extra rules.
    • It requires ongoing management to keep costs under control.

Organic vs paid at a glance

    • Cost: organic costs time; paid costs time and ad spend.
    • Speed: organic is slow to build; paid can deliver results within days.
    • Audience: organic mainly reaches existing followers and their networks; paid reaches the audience you define.
    • Longevity: organic content and community keep giving; paid results stop when the spend does.
    • Best for: organic suits relationships, trust and customer service; paid suits awareness, lead generation and sales.

Why the two work best together

Think of organic social as your shop window and paid social as the signs that bring people to it. Someone who sees an ad will often click through to your profile before they act. If they find an empty or neglected page, the ad has been wasted.

A combined approach usually looks like this:

    1. Post consistently to build a credible, active presence.
    2. Watch which organic posts perform best. These show you what resonates with your audience.
    3. Put budget behind proven content, either by boosting the post or turning it into an ad.
    4. Retarget people who have engaged with your content or visited your site.
    5. Use what you learn from ad results, such as which messages and images work, to improve your organic posts.

    Which should you start with?

It depends on your goals and resources:

    • New business or new to social media? Start by building a solid organic presence so your profiles look credible, then add a modest paid budget.
    • Need enquiries or sales quickly? Paid social will usually get you there faster, but keep your organic profiles active and up to date.
    • Limited time? A smaller amount of good organic content plus a well-managed paid campaign often outperforms daily posting with no strategy behind it.

Whichever route you take, decide what success looks like before you start, whether that is enquiries, sales, website visits or event bookings, and track it.

    Choosing the right platforms

You do not need to be everywhere. Focus on the platforms your customers actually use. Facebook and Instagram suit many local and consumer businesses, LinkedIn is strong for business-to-business services, and TikTok can work well for brands that are comfortable with short, informal video. Our guide to why social media marketing matters covers the main platforms in more detail.
